**New Delhi, India –** Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a renowned economist and architect of India’s economic liberalization, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. Singh, who served two terms as Prime Minister (2004-2014), was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi after suffering a sudden loss of consciousness. The hospital attributed his death to age-related medical conditions.

Singh’s career spanned decades, beginning with humble origins in a family in British-ruled India (now Pakistan). He rose to prominence through rigorous academic pursuits, earning a doctorate from Oxford University. His expertise led to roles as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and a key government advisor before he unexpectedly entered politics.

In 1991, Singh became Finance Minister, spearheading crucial economic reforms that rescued India from a severe balance of payments crisis. He implemented deregulation and liberalization policies, opening up the previously insular economy to the global market.

His elevation to Prime Minister in 2004 was equally unexpected, succeeding after the Indian National Congress party’s victory. His tenure was marked by a period of significant economic growth, during which his government launched welfare schemes aimed at improving the lives of rural poor. A landmark nuclear energy deal with the United States, signed in 2008, further solidified India’s international standing.

Despite his achievements, Singh faced challenges, including political infighting and coalition pressures that hampered his economic reform agenda. His government eventually lost power in 2014 to Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party.

Current Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute, calling Singh one of India’s “most distinguished leaders” and acknowledging his profound impact on India’s economic policy. Tributes have also poured in from other political leaders and figures, highlighting Singh’s integrity, wisdom, and humility. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.
