Fri Dec 27 13:56:01 UTC 2024: ## Mysuru’s Cleanliness Ranking Plummets, NGO Calls for Action

**Mysuru, India (December 27, 2024)** – Once lauded as one of India’s cleanest cities, Mysuru has seen its ranking plummet from the top spot in 2016 to 27th in 2023. In response, the Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP), a local NGO, is urging the creation of a high-level committee to oversee the city’s cleanliness efforts.

The MGP’s proposal, sent to Justice Subhash B. Adi, chairman of the State-level National Green Tribunal committee, suggests a committee composed of former Mayors and elected representatives from various political parties. This follows a recent meeting convened by Justice Adi to address Mysuru’s civic issues.

Bhamy V. Shenoy, the MGP’s founding working president, outlined several recommendations, including an incentive-based program to promote composting biodegradable waste and the establishment of a technical committee to assess waste generation and disposal methods. Shenoy emphasized the need to view waste as a resource, potentially sparking innovative citizen solutions. He also criticized the current ₹11 lakh fine for littering as insufficient and called for stricter enforcement.

The MGP welcomed the Mysuru City Corporation’s (MCC) initiative to issue “Swachchata Mithra” IDs to citizens who volunteer to monitor cleanliness in their wards. Other concerns raised included violations of the Karnataka Park and Open Spaces Act, footpath encroachment, and the lack of facilities to handle construction and demolition waste. The MGP urged the NGT to conduct periodic audits of Mysuru’s cleanliness initiatives to ensure sustained progress.
