Thu Dec 26 19:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Sweden Eyes Gold at 2025 World Juniors, Led by Returning Stars

**Ottawa, ON –** Sweden, aiming for their first World Junior Championship gold medal since 2012, enters the 2025 tournament in Ottawa with a strong core of returning players. Nine players from the 2024 silver-medal winning team will be key to their success, including highly touted prospects Otto Stenberg and Theo Lindstein, both recently drafted by the St. Louis Blues.

Stenberg, a forward, led Sweden in goals last year, while Lindstein, a defenseman, led all tournament defensemen in points. Their experience, along with that of other returning players like Axel Sandin-Pellikka (Detroit Red Wings) and Tom Willander (Vancouver Canucks), will be crucial for Sweden’s campaign.

Coach Magnus Havelid highlighted the leadership and skill of Stenberg and Lindstein, emphasizing their importance in key moments. The team also boasts returning forwards David Edstrom (Nashville Predators), Felix Unger Sorum (Carolina Hurricanes), Zeb Forsfjall (Seattle Kraken), Anton Wahlberg (Buffalo Sabres), and goalie Melker Thelin (Utah Hockey Club). Havelid believes their experience playing on smaller North American rinks will be a significant advantage.

Sweden’s Group B appears manageable, with a predicted path to first place and a semifinal berth. However, the team suffered a setback with an injury to Jack Berglund (Philadelphia Flyers) prior to the tournament. Goaltending is a question mark, with Melker Thelin and Marcus Gidlof competing for the starting role. The emergence of Victor Eklund, a highly rated prospect, could provide an offensive boost.

Slovakia, Czechia, and Switzerland round out Group B. Slovakia boasts a strong lineup led by Dalibor Dvorsky (St. Louis Blues), and Czechia will rely on Eduard Sale (Seattle Kraken) and their returning bronze-medal winning team members. Switzerland faces an uphill battle, needing a win against Kazakhstan on the final day to avoid relegation. Kazakhstan, newly promoted from Division I, hopes to make its mark. The tournament runs from December 26th to January 5th.
