**NEW DELHI** – India today commemorated Veer Baal Diwas, honoring the courage and sacrifice of Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh, the young sons of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru. The day, observed annually on December 26th, remembers their martyrdom in 1705.
Nine-year-old Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and six-year-old Sahibzada Fateh Singh were brutally killed by the Mughal governor Wazir Khan of Sirhind after refusing to renounce their faith. Their unwavering commitment to their religion and humanity, even in the face of death, serves as an enduring symbol of courage and faith. Their older brothers, Baba Ajit Singh and Baba Jujhar Singh, also died fighting the Mughals earlier in the conflict. Their mother, Mata Gujri, also perished after learning of her sons’ fate.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared Veer Baal Diwas a national observance in January 2022, highlighting the young Sahibzadas’ sacrifice as an inspiring testament to faith and fortitude. The Prime Minister emphasized the day’s significance in reminding future generations of the importance of truth and righteousness, representing a crucial chapter in Indian history. The event is marked nationwide with prayers, religious ceremonies, and remembrance events.
