**London, UK** – New research has unearthed compelling evidence highlighting the previously under-recognized participation of Indian soldiers in the famous Christmas truce of 1914. A rare spice tin, part of a Christmas gift from Princess Mary to troops, has been discovered in German archives, revealing its exchange between British Indian and German soldiers during the brief ceasefire on the Western Front.
Professor Peter Doyle, a military historian at Goldsmiths, University of London, presented the findings, detailing how the tin, one of only two known to survive, ended up in German hands. The tins, originally filled with spices and a picture of Princess Mary (replacing the smoking kit given to British soldiers), were part of a morale-boosting initiative. Professor Doyle’s research, detailed in his book “For Every Sailor Afloat, Every Soldier at the Front: Princess Mary’s Christmas Gift 1914,” links the tin to the 39th Garhwal Rifles stationed in Givenchy, France, during the truce.
Confirmation came from German archives, where historian Robin Schafer located newspaper accounts mentioning the receipt of spice tins as gifts from Indian soldiers. One soldier, Wilhelm Althoff, described receiving “figs [and] a shiny metal box with spices” from Indian troops.
This discovery challenges the traditional narrative of the Christmas truce, which often overlooks the contributions of Indian soldiers. Professor Doyle emphasizes that the truce was not solely a “Anglo-Saxon” affair, and that Indian soldiers were active participants, not just observers.
The research underscores the immense contribution of over 1.4 million Indian soldiers to the British war effort during World War I. Historian Shrabani Basu, author of “For King and Another Country: Indian Soldiers on the Western Front, 1914-18,” further emphasizes the significance of their largely unrecognized sacrifices. Professor Doyle and Professor Schafer hope this discovery will encourage further research and the surfacing of additional evidence, including photographs, to further illuminate this pivotal moment in history.
