Thu Dec 26 11:27:43 UTC 2024: ## Plane Crash in Kazakhstan: Was it Shot Down? Conflicting Accounts Emerge

**AKTAU, Kazakhstan –** A devastating plane crash near Aktau, Kazakhstan, has claimed the lives of 38 passengers, sparking a heated debate over the cause of the tragedy. While Azerbaijani authorities and Russia offer differing preliminary findings, a report by the Wall Street Journal points to a potential Russian anti-aircraft system as the culprit.

Azerbaijan Airlines Flight, an Embraer 190 en route from Baku to Grozny, Russia, crashed Wednesday morning after a reported emergency landing attempt near the Caspian Sea. All 62 passengers and five crew members were aboard. While President Ilham Aliyev suggested bad weather may have forced a course change, the investigation is ongoing, and the flight data recorder (black box) has been recovered.

Russia’s civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, initially attributed the crash to a potential bird strike. However, experts quoted by Reuters question the plausibility of this explanation, noting that while bird strikes can impact flight control, they are unlikely to cause such a drastic deviation from course.

Adding fuel to the fire, a report by the Wall Street Journal, citing UK-based aviation security firm Osprey Flight Solutions, suggests the plane was likely shot down by a Russian military air-defense system. Osprey’s chief intelligence officer, Matt Borie, stated that video evidence and the airspace security situation indicate the possibility of anti-aircraft fire. The report further highlights “perforations in the plane’s tail section” as suggestive of a missile attack.

Ukraine’s national security official, Andriy Kovalenko, also directly blamed Russia on social media platform X.

Videos circulating online show the plane in a steep descent before crashing and bursting into flames. Further complicating matters, reports indicate drone strikes occurred in regions near Grozny on the same morning. The conflicting accounts and the evidence presented have cast a dark cloud over the incident, demanding a thorough and transparent investigation.
