**Kozhikode, Kerala:** Acclaimed Malayalam author M.T. Vasudevan Nair passed away late tonight at a hospital in Kozhikode, Kerala. He was 91. Nair, a recipient of the Jnanpith Award and Padma Bhushan, had been hospitalized for 11 days following heart and respiratory issues, exacerbated by a recent heart attack. His condition worsened today with the decline of kidney and heart functions, leading to his demise.

Nair’s literary contributions spanned seven decades, encompassing novels, short stories, screenplays, plays, children’s literature, travelogues, and essays. He also made a significant mark as a film director, helming six feature films including the classic *Nirmalyam*, and two documentaries. He won numerous awards, including four national awards for best screenplay and three state awards for best director, along with eleven state awards for best screenplay. His works such as *Randamoozham* and *Olavum Theeravum* are considered cornerstones of Malayalam literature.

His death is a significant loss to the world of Malayalam literature and Indian cinema. Tributes have poured in from across the state and nation, remembering him as a literary giant and a unique personality. His body will lie in state at his home, ‘Sithara,’ for public viewing until this evening. The funeral is scheduled for tomorrow evening.
