Thu Dec 26 04:40:00 UTC 2024: ## Indian Railways Ends Refunds for Delayed Private Trains

**NEW DELHI:** Indian Railways has discontinued refunds for delays on private trains, according to information revealed through a Right to Information (RTI) request. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), which manages ticketing and services for private trains, confirmed the cessation of this policy, effective February 15, 2024.

While refunds for delays on government-operated trains will continue, passengers will no longer receive compensation for delays on private trains like the Tejas Express (Delhi-Lucknow and Ahmedabad-Mumbai routes). The IRCTC did not provide a reason for the change.

Between October 4, 2019, and February 16, 2024, approximately ₹26 lakh (approximately $314,000 USD) in compensation was paid for train delays. This included ₹15.65 lakh (approximately $188,000 USD) in the 2023-24 fiscal year alone. The previous years’ figures were ₹1.78 lakh (2019-20), ₹0 (2020-21), ₹96,000 (2021-22), and ₹7.74 lakh (2022-23).

Previously, the refund amount varied depending on the delay: ₹100 for delays of 1-2 hours and ₹250 for delays of 2-4 hours. Passengers who cancelled tickets due to delays received full refunds and were provided with food and water.
