Tue Dec 17 15:52:00 UTC 2024: ## Indian Scientists Develop Anti-Pesticide Suit for Farmers
**NEW DELHI –** Scientists at India’s Department of Biotechnology (DBT) have unveiled “Kisan Kavach,” a protective suit designed to shield farm laborers from the harmful effects of pesticide exposure. The suit, costing ₹4,000, comprises trousers, a pullover, and a face covering made from a specially developed “oxime fabric” that chemically breaks down common pesticides.
Current practices often see farmers using ordinary cloth for protection, leading to pesticide accumulation and health risks. Research, including studies on rodents published in *Nature Communications*, indicates the Kisan Kavach significantly reduces pesticide absorption. While human trials are pending, animal studies showed a marked difference in survival rates between those wearing the suit and those using standard clothing. The suit remains effective across various temperatures, after exposure to UV light, and even after 150 washes.
The development comes amid concerns about widespread pesticide use in India. While India used over 61,000 tonnes of pesticides in 2020, the country produces four times that amount, according to government data. The high pesticide usage is linked to health problems, including cancer, dizziness, vomiting, and headaches among farmers. The Science Minister, Jitendra Singh, emphasized the need for increased awareness among farmers about the new protective suit and pledged efforts to reduce its cost. A company, Sepio Health Pvt. Ltd., has been formed to manufacture the Kisan Kavach.
