Wed Dec 25 13:53:56 UTC 2024: ## Dalit Activists Burn Copies of Manusmriti in Kalaburagi
**KALABURAGI, December 25, 2024** – Members of the Dalit Sangharsh Samiti (DSS) staged a protest in Kalaburagi on Wednesday, commemorating the 97th anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar’s public burning of the Manusmriti in 1927. The activists held a mock funeral procession for the ancient Hindu text before setting fire to several copies at Jagat Circle.
The protest, led by State convener Arjun Bhadre, aimed to condemn the caste and gender discrimination perpetuated by the Manusmriti’s social hierarchy, known as the Varnashrama system. Bhadre stated that the burning symbolized the rejection of a history of exploitation and echoed Dr. Ambedkar’s belief that India cannot progress while right-wing Brahminical ideology persists.
Bhadre further emphasized the ongoing struggle against caste-based discrimination, highlighting Dr. Ambedkar’s pioneering activism a century ago. He called for collective action against what he termed “fascist forces” attempting to undermine the Indian Constitution. The demonstration served as a powerful reminder of the continued relevance of Ambedkar’s fight for social justice.
