Wed Dec 25 07:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Iran Eases Internet Restrictions, Unbans WhatsApp and Google Play

**Tehran, Iran** – In a significant move to relax its strict internet controls, Iranian authorities have voted to lift the ban on WhatsApp and Google Play, according to state media. The decision, announced Tuesday, follows a meeting chaired by President Masoud Pezeshkian, who pledged to ease internet restrictions upon taking office in July.

The official IRNA news agency reported a majority vote in favor of restoring access to these popular foreign platforms. Information and Communications Technology Minister Sattar Hashemi stated that this marks the first step in removing internet limitations. However, the exact implementation date remains unclear.

This decision comes amidst ongoing debate within Iran. While critics argued that the restrictions were economically damaging and fueled public anger, as presidential adviser Ali Rabiei stated on X, some, including 136 members of parliament, voiced concerns, warning that lifting the bans would be advantageous to Iran’s enemies. These lawmakers called for any access to be contingent on adherence to Islamic values and Iranian law.

The move follows months of widespread anti-government protests, during which social media platforms played a crucial role. The US had previously urged tech companies to aid in circumventing online censorship in countries like Iran.

While WhatsApp and Google Play are now slated for unblocking, other platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube remain banned, a policy enacted in 2009. Instagram, blocked after the September 2022 protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, also remains inaccessible. Iranians have long relied on VPNs to bypass these restrictions. The long-term impact of this partial lifting of the internet ban remains to be seen.
