Wed Dec 25 16:53:11 UTC 2024: ## Kolkata Junior Doctors Defy Court Order, Continue Protests

**Kolkata, December 26, 2024** – Junior doctors in Kolkata are continuing their protests despite a Calcutta High Court order allowing demonstrations only until December 26th. The Joint Platform of Doctors, representing the agitating physicians, informed the Kolkata Police Commissioner of their intention to maintain their sit-in at Esplanade, citing unmet demands related to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital earlier this year.

The doctors’ continued protest follows the granting of bail to two accused – the former principal of R.G. Kar Hospital and a former police officer – who were arrested for allegedly tampering with evidence in the case. The bail was granted after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) failed to file a charge sheet within the stipulated timeframe. The doctors express dissatisfaction with the CBI’s investigation speed, claiming it has slowed since their initial protests.

Adding to the tension, the parents of the deceased doctor have also moved the Calcutta High Court seeking a fresh investigation, citing a lack of faith in the CBI. While the High Court declined to intervene immediately, the doctors’ continued defiance raises the possibility of further confrontation with authorities. The Kolkata Police has yet to announce its response to the doctors’ decision to extend their protest. The situation remains volatile as the doctors vow to continue their street demonstrations until justice is served.
