Wed Dec 25 15:27:20 UTC 2024: ## Pune’s Deshpande Church: A Unique Blend of Marathi Culture and Christian Faith
**PUNE, INDIA –** Nestled in Kasba Peth, Pune, stands the Deshpande Church, a unique testament to the city’s rich cultural tapestry. Unlike most Protestant churches in the region, this church boasts a Marathi name and conducts all its services in the local language, making it a beacon of religious and cultural integration.
The church’s namesake, Prahlad Ramchandra Deshpande, a Nagpur native, arrived in Pune between 1935 and 1940 to spread Christianity. His dedication led the community to name the church in his honor in 1967, after he passed away in 1949. Initially, services were held at the Scottish Missionary School before the church was built on the school’s premises.
Brother Deshpande, a man of deep faith who converted to Christianity during his college years, was known for his selfless service to the poor and needy. His bungalow even served as a shelter, earning the moniker “Deshpande’s Math.”
Church secretary Noel Dethe and priest Wilson Pandit, who has served the church for 25 years, highlighted Deshpande’s significant contribution to the growth of Christianity in Pune, a city with Christian roots dating back to the 18th century. The Deshpande Church, they say, stands as a vibrant symbol of Pune’s diverse heritage, harmoniously blending Marathi traditions with Christian faith. Its commitment to community service and its unique Marathi services continue to inspire generations.
