**New Delhi, December 24, 2024** – Union Home Minister Amit Shah held meetings today to assess the implementation of the three recently enacted criminal laws across India and specifically in Uttarakhand. The new laws, replacing the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and Indian Evidence Act, were passed in December 2023 and rolled out in July 2024.
In a meeting with the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Mr. Shah emphasized the need for timely alerts throughout the criminal justice process, from registration to resolution, to benefit victims and expedite investigations. He also advocated for increased technological adoption, suggesting that Ministry of Home Affairs and NCRB officers visit states to provide technical assistance.
A separate meeting with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami focused on the state’s progress. Mr. Shah urged for 100% implementation as soon as possible, stressing the need for at least one forensic mobile van per district and the establishment of standardized video conferencing facilities. He also demanded regular monitoring of Zero FIRs and a 15-day review of implementation progress by the Chief Minister. The Uttarakhand Director General of Police, Deepam Seth, was instructed to ensure timely case investigations by all Superintendents of Police. The meeting highlighted the ongoing need for technical upgrades and logistical improvements to fully implement the new laws.
