Mon Dec 23 15:56:15 UTC 2024: ## Coimbatore Coconut Farmers Reap Rewards from High Prices

**COIMBATORE, December 23, 2024** – Coconut farmers in Coimbatore are celebrating sustained high prices for their produce at Uzhavar Sandhais (farmers’ markets). Prices remain strong, ranging from ₹35 to ₹60 per kg, depending on the market and coconut size. This boon comes despite a summer-induced decline in production.

At most markets, prices hover between ₹54 and ₹60 per kg, with the exception of Singanallur, where smaller coconuts fetch ₹35-₹38 per kg. Officials predict prices will remain high until January. The strong demand has even led some farmers to harvest early, foregoing optimal oil yield to capitalize on the favorable market conditions.

While copra prices are also relatively high at ₹140 per kg in the open market, coconut farmers are finding the direct sale of coconuts more profitable. According to S. Arumuganathan, secretary of the Agricultural Marketing Committee in Coimbatore, optimal oil yield requires harvesting after eleven months, a factor some farmers are currently overlooking due to the current lucrative coconut prices.
