**New York, NY –** New York City police have arrested a man suspected of setting a woman on fire on a Brooklyn subway train, resulting in her death. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the act as “one of the most depraved crimes a person could commit.”
According to authorities, the suspect calmly approached the victim on a stationary F train Sunday morning and ignited her clothing with what is believed to be a lighter. The fire spread rapidly, and despite the quick response of police who extinguished the flames with a fire extinguisher, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police obtained a clear image of the suspect from body camera footage. He remained at the scene, sitting on a nearby platform bench. Following the release of his image to the public, three high school students provided a crucial tip leading to his arrest at a Manhattan station. Commissioner Tisch publicly thanked the students for their quick thinking and decisive action.
The suspect, who immigrated to the United States from Guatemala in 2018, and the victim remain unidentified. Police stated there was no apparent prior interaction between the two.
