Mon Dec 23 11:18:50 UTC 2024: ## Japanese Automakers Honda and Nissan Announce Merger to Tackle EV Market Lag

**Tokyo, Japan** – In a move that will reshape the global automotive landscape, Japan’s Honda and Nissan announced plans Monday to merge, creating the world’s third-largest automaker by 2026. The merger, which will also include Mitsubishi Motors, aims to bolster Japan’s competitiveness in the rapidly growing electric vehicle (EV) market.

The combined entity, projected to be worth over $50 billion, will produce approximately 8 million vehicles annually, leveraging the strengths of each company. Honda, currently Japan’s second-largest automaker, will initially lead the merged entity’s management. Nissan, which has faced financial difficulties in recent years, will contribute its expertise in battery technology and EV production. Mitsubishi Motors will add further production capacity to the combined entity.

The three companies, already collaborating on EV components and autonomous driving software, see the merger as crucial to catching up to global EV leaders. This collaboration, initially announced in August, will now be significantly strengthened under the unified structure. Honda’s President Toshihiro Mibe and Nissan’s Makoto Uchida signed a memorandum of understanding outlining the establishment of a holding company by August 2026.

Former Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn, who fled Japan after facing fraud charges, criticized the merger as a “desperate move.” However, analysts see it as a necessary step for Nissan, which recently announced job cuts and production reductions to address financial losses.

The merger is expected to be the largest reshaping of the global auto industry since Stellantis’ formation in 2021, marking a significant shift in the global automotive landscape. The combined strength of Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi is anticipated to enhance their competitiveness in the global EV market and beyond.
