**New Delhi, December 23, 2024** – President Droupadi Murmu has appointed retired Supreme Court Justice V. Ramasubramanian as the new Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). Justice Ramasubramanian, a renowned scholar and jurist from Tamil Nadu, succeeds Justice (retired) Arun Kumar Mishra, whose tenure ended on June 1st, 2024.

A high-powered committee, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and including leaders of the opposition, selected Justice Ramasubramanian on December 18th. The committee, as mandated by law, also comprised the Lok Sabha Speaker, Home Minister, and deputy chairperson of the Rajya Sabha. Vijaya Bharathi Sayani served as acting chairperson during the vacancy.

Justice Ramasubramanian, born on June 30, 1958, boasts an impressive career. He practiced law for 23 years before becoming an additional judge of the Madras High Court in 2006, later becoming a permanent judge in 2009. He served as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court before his appointment to the Supreme Court in 2019. Known for his scholarly contributions and his mastery of legal writing, Justice Ramasubramanian’s appointment is widely anticipated to bring significant experience and expertise to the NHRC.
