Mon Dec 23 15:04:58 UTC 2024: ## Nilgiris Forest Department Uses Drones and Innovative Techniques to Deter Problem Elephant
**UDHAGAMANDALAM, December 23, 2024** – The Gudalur Forest Division in the Nilgiris is employing a multi-pronged approach to deter an elephant, known as CT-16 or “Bullet,” from damaging houses in the Cherambadi area of Pandalur. The elephant, while not inherently aggressive, has been seeking food grains in human settlements.
The department is utilizing advanced drone technology equipped with thermal cameras to monitor the elephant’s movements and scare it away from populated areas. In addition, officials are experimenting with several innovative deterrents. These include spraying the dung of musth elephants (a period of heightened aggression) around affected houses, burning dried dung to create smoke, and applying a paste of chili and neem oil to doors and windows.
Divisonal Forest Officer Vengatesh Prabhu stated that these methods are showing promise in mitigating localized human-animal conflict. He emphasized that the aim is to minimize negative interactions, drawing a parallel to the tragic 2022 incident where another elephant accidentally killed an elderly woman. That elephant, PM2, was subsequently captured and relocated to Muthanga in Kerala.
While CT-16 is not known for aggression, the department is taking proactive measures to prevent future incidents and protect both the elephant and the local community.
