**Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan:** A three-year-old male tiger was found dead at the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve (RTR) in Rajasthan on Sunday morning, prompting concerns about the reserve’s overpopulation of tigers. Forest guards discovered the carcass in the Aamaghati area with injuries to its neck, leg, and head.
Anoop KR, Chief Conservator of Forests and RTR Field Director, stated that the tiger likely died in a territorial fight. Camera trap footage showed the presence of two tigers in the area, supporting this theory. Officials cite overcrowding as a significant challenge facing the reserve, with over 70 tigers currently inhabiting the 900 sq km area. A Wildlife Institute of India study (2006-2014) suggests the reserve’s carrying capacity for adult tigers is approximately 40, highlighting the strain on resources and the increased likelihood of territorial conflicts. The incident underscores the ongoing struggle to manage the tiger population within the reserve’s limited capacity.
