**TIRUNELVELI, Tamil Nadu –** A team from Kerala has launched a cleanup operation in Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, removing tons of hazardous waste illegally dumped in the area. The waste, including biomedical materials like syringes and blood samples, originated from a cancer center and a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The dumping prompted a suo moto case by the Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which ordered Kerala to remove the waste within three days.
Six locations across Tirunelveli district were affected. Sixteen trucks from Kerala were deployed on Sunday, December 22nd, to transport the waste. Officials from both Kerala and Tamil Nadu oversaw the operation, including representatives from the Kerala Pollution Control Board, the Thiruvananthapuram district administration, and Tirunelveli’s revenue and health departments. A detailed report on the incident is expected to be submitted to the Kerala government. The cleanup follows the arrest of two individuals previously charged with illegal biomedical waste dumping in Tamil Nadu.
