Sun Dec 22 06:12:26 UTC 2024: ## Hyderabad Market Turns Waste into Power, Saving Money and Boosting Sustainability

**Hyderabad, Telangana, December 22, 2024** – Hyderabad’s Bowenpally vegetable market, a bustling hub of activity, has become a model of sustainable energy production. A newly installed waste-to-power plant, built at a cost of ₹3 crore by a collaboration between the CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), the State Department of Marketing, and Ahuja Engineering Services, is converting the market’s organic waste into electricity and biogas.

The plant, utilizing anaerobic gas lift reactor technology, processes three to four tonnes of daily waste, producing up to 300 units of electricity and 60 kg of biogas. This energy powers over 100 streetlights, 170 stalls, an administrative building, and the market’s water supply, resulting in significant savings on electricity bills. The biogas replaces LPG in market canteens, and the resulting bio-manure is sold as organic fertilizer.

The project showcases a successful win-win scenario, transforming waste into a valuable resource and highlighting the potential of sustainable solutions in urban environments. The plant’s success demonstrates a practical and efficient method for managing organic waste while simultaneously generating clean energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
