**New Delhi, India** – India celebrated National Mathematics Day on December 22nd, commemorating the birth anniversary of the legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. The day, initiated in 2012 by then Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, aims to honor Ramanujan’s contributions and inspire future generations to excel in mathematics.

This year’s theme, “Mathematics: A Bridge of Innovation and Progress,” highlights the subject’s fundamental role in scientific and technological advancement. The focus is on encouraging students and youth to view mathematics as a creative and useful tool for problem-solving and innovation.

Ramanujan, despite a tragically short life (1887-1920), made groundbreaking contributions to number theory, infinite series, continued fractions, and mock theta functions. His work on the partition function, prime number distribution, and efficient series for calculating π (pi) remains highly influential in modern computation. His famous “taxi-cab number,” 1729, exemplifies his insights into number theory.
