Sat Dec 21 12:00:14 UTC 2024: ## Former Indian Supreme Court Judge Appointed UN Internal Justice Council Chairperson

**New Delhi, December 21, 2024** – Justice Madan B. Lokur, a former judge of the Supreme Court of India, has been appointed Chairperson of the United Nations Internal Justice Council. The appointment, announced by UN Secretary-General António Guterres on December 19th, will run until November 12, 2028.

Justice Lokur, who served on the Supreme Court of India from 2012 to 2018, is also a judge on the non-resident panel of the Supreme Court of Fiji. This appointment marks a significant achievement, making him the first Indian judge to hold a judicial position in another country’s Supreme Court.

The UN Internal Justice Council, in addition to Justice Lokur, comprises four other distinguished jurists: Carmen Artigas (Uruguay), Rosalie Balkin (Australia), Stefan Brezina (Austria), and Jay Pozenel (United States of America). The council’s composition includes representatives from staff and management, alongside external jurists.
