**PARIS** – A French court has sentenced eight individuals to prison terms ranging from one to 16 years for their involvement in the 2020 murder of Samuel Paty, a teacher beheaded outside his school after showing caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad during a class discussion on freedom of expression. The Paris Special Assize Court found the defendants guilty of orchestrating an online hate campaign that culminated in the attack carried out by an 18-year-old Russian of Chechen origin, who was killed by police at the scene.
Among those receiving the harshest sentences were Naim Boudaoud and Azim Epsirkhanov, each sentenced to 16 years for complicity in murder. Boudaoud drove the attacker to the school, while Epsirkhanov assisted in procuring weapons. Muslim preacher Abdelhakim Sefrioui received a 15-year sentence for organizing the online hate campaign and publicly denouncing Paty. Brahim Chnina was sentenced to 13 years for association with a terrorist enterprise after publishing false accusations against Paty online. Four others involved in spreading inflammatory content online also received convictions.
While the prosecution acknowledged that the defendants didn’t explicitly intend Paty’s death, they argued that their actions created a climate of hatred that inevitably led to the violence. The court agreed, citing the “exceptional gravity of the facts.”
The verdict brought a mix of relief and grief. Gaelle Paty, the slain teacher’s sister, expressed relief at the guilty verdicts, stating that hearing the word “guilty” was what she needed. However, families of the accused reacted with anger and distress.
This trial concludes the judicial process surrounding Paty’s murder, though last year a separate court convicted several adolescents involved in the conspiracy. The case remains a stark reminder of the dangers of online hate speech and its potential to incite violence.
