**Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh –** In a unique case highlighting the challenges faced by same-sex couples in India, two women recently married in Kannauj after one underwent a gender reassignment surgery to circumvent societal disapproval.
Ranu, formerly Shivangi, spent approximately ₹7 lakh (approximately $8,500 USD) on the gender transition process to marry her partner, Jyoti. The couple met when Jyoti rented a space in Shivangi’s father’s jewelry shop to open a beauty parlor. Their relationship blossomed, leading to their decision to marry.
However, fearing social stigma associated with same-sex marriage, the couple opted for Shivangi to undergo gender reassignment surgery. After consultations in Lucknow and Delhi, Shivangi underwent the procedure, changing her name to Ranu. While one final surgery remains, the couple, with their families’ blessings, married on November 25th in a ceremony at Kannauj’s Sadar Kotwali. The wedding was celebrated with great pomp and circumstance.
This case underscores the complex social and legal landscape faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in India, where same-sex marriage remains legally unrecognized. The couple’s decision highlights the lengths some individuals go to in order to navigate societal pressures and achieve their desired relationship.
