**NEW DELHI –** Kia has shifted its focus for its second mass-market electric vehicle (EV) in India. While the company previously announced plans for two EVs by 2026, including an electric Carens MPV, it has now confirmed it’s exploring an EV based on its newly launched subcompact SUV, the Syros.
The Syros, which recently made its global debut with petrol and diesel engine options, shares its K1 platform with Hyundai’s Casper and its electric derivative, the Inster EV. This platform’s proven EV capability makes it a strong candidate for Kia’s second Indian EV. The potential Syros-based EV could offer similar powertrain options to the Inster, potentially boasting a range comparable to competitors like the Tata Nexon EV.
Kia has yet to confirm specific details, including the launch date, name, and styling of this potential EV. However, the Inster EV’s success in global markets suggests a similar strategy could be employed, potentially with design modifications distinguishing it from the petrol and diesel Syros models. Bookings for the Syros begin in January 2025, with deliveries commencing in February. The company’s decision to prioritize this Syros-based EV indicates a strategic shift in its Indian EV market plans.
