**Jaipur, Rajasthan:** A devastating gas tanker explosion on the Jaipur-Ajmer highway claimed the lives of 14 people early Friday morning, with the death toll expected to climb further. Over 35 vehicles were destroyed in the resulting inferno, which erupted around dawn while many were asleep.
Thirteen victims perished at Jaipur’s SMS Hospital, while one died at Jaypuriya Hospital. The severity of the accident is underscored by the fact that at least 10 critically injured individuals remain hospitalized with burn injuries ranging from 60% to 90%. These patients are on ventilators and their conditions are described as precarious by hospital authorities. A total of 44 people sustained severe burns and are receiving treatment at various hospitals.
Chief Minister Bhanwarlal Sharma has ordered a special campaign to rectify “black spots” – accident-prone areas – on Rajasthan’s roads. The Public Works Department has been instructed to identify and swiftly improve these locations to minimize future casualties. A six-member investigation committee, headed by Jaipur District Collector Jitendra Kumar Soni, has been formed to probe the incident, following orders from the state government.
The collision between the LPG tanker and a truck near Bhankrota sparked the massive fire, engulfing numerous vehicles and causing widespread damage. Graphic images and videos circulating on social media depict the horrifying extent of the disaster. Authorities have established a helpline and are using IT support to identify victims. One survivor, Govind Singh, who was traveling to Jaipur for wedding preparations, managed to call a friend after the accident, highlighting the human tragedy unfolding.
