Thu Dec 19 18:32:13 UTC 2024: ## Suspect in UnitedHealthcare CEO Murder Extradited to New York

**NEW YORK, Dec. 19, 2024** – Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, was extradited to New York on Thursday to face federal charges. Mangione, who was arrested in Pennsylvania last week after a five-day manhunt, waived a preliminary hearing and agreed to be transferred. He now faces federal charges of murder, use of a firearm, and stalking, in addition to existing state charges.

The 26-year-old Ivy League graduate is accused of ambushing and fatally shooting Thompson on December 4th outside a Manhattan hotel. Authorities recovered a firearm, passport, fake IDs, and approximately $10,000 from Mangione at the time of his arrest.

A federal complaint unsealed Thursday revealed a notebook containing handwritten entries expressing hostility toward the health insurance industry and wealthy executives. These entries, dating back to August and October, allegedly detail plans to target an insurance CEO at an investor conference. While investigators believe Mangione’s actions stemmed from anger toward the healthcare system, UnitedHealthcare confirmed he was not a client.

Mangione’s lawyers have urged against prejudging the case. However, social media posts reveal Mangione’s past advocacy for individuals struggling with medical issues within a capitalist system. His family released a statement expressing shock and devastation at his arrest. Meanwhile, Thompson, a 50-year-old father of two, had worked for UnitedHealth Group for 20 years. The case has sparked intense public discussion regarding resentment toward the U.S. healthcare system and corporate greed.
