Thu Dec 19 11:06:32 UTC 2024: ## Pakistan Condemns New US Sanctions on Ballistic Missile Program

**ISLAMABAD, Dec 19, 2024** – Pakistan has vehemently denounced new U.S. sanctions targeting its ballistic missile program, calling them discriminatory and a threat to regional peace and security. The sanctions, announced Thursday, freeze U.S. assets belonging to four Pakistani entities—the National Development Complex, Akhtar and Sons Private Limited, Affiliates International, and Rockside Enterprise—and prohibit Americans from conducting business with them.

The U.S. State Department alleges these entities aided in the development of Pakistan’s long-range ballistic missile program, including the Shaheen series. However, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry rejected these claims, arguing that previous sanctions were based on unsubstantiated suspicions and that the new measures represent a double standard, given the U.S.’s provision of advanced military technology to other nations. The ministry warned the sanctions could destabilize the region.

Security expert Syed Muhammad Ali criticized the sanctions as short-sighted and destabilizing, arguing they fail to consider the strategic realities of South Asia. Pakistan’s nuclear and missile program, analysts note, is largely viewed as a countermeasure to perceived threats from India.

The two countries have a history of tension, including three wars, two of which were fought over the disputed territory of Kashmir. Both nations regularly test-fire missiles of various ranges. Pakistan declared itself a nuclear power in 1998 following nuclear tests by India.
