GURUGRAM, Haryana – Om Prakash Chautala, the former chief minister of Haryana and supremo of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), passed away on Friday at the age of 89. A party spokesperson confirmed that Chautala died following a cardiac arrest.

Chautala, son of former Deputy Prime Minister Chaudhary Devi Lal, had a long and impactful, albeit controversial, political career. He served four separate terms as Haryana’s chief minister, spanning from 1989 to 2005. His political career began in 1970 when he was elected to the Haryana Legislative Assembly. He also served as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha.

Beyond his chief ministership, Chautala was a significant figure in Haryana’s political landscape, founding the INLD in 1996. His family remains prominent in Haryana politics, with his son Abhay Singh Chautala serving as an MLA and his grandson, Dushyant Chautala, leading the Jannayak Janata Party and having served as Haryana’s Deputy Chief Minister.

Chautala’s career was marked by both success and controversy. He faced accusations ranging from import violations to involvement in a political opponent’s murder. In 2022, at the age of 87, he was briefly imprisoned in Tihar Jail for a disproportionate assets case.

Despite his legal battles and controversies, Chautala remained a powerful figure in Haryana’s political scene until his death. His legacy will undoubtedly be a subject of debate and discussion for years to come.
