**Mumbai, India** – A collision between an Indian Navy ship and a passenger ferry near Karanj in Mumbai has resulted in the tragic deaths of 13 people, including a family of three – a couple and their five-year-old child. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening when the naval vessel, undergoing engine trials, lost control and struck the passenger ferry, “Neil Kamal,” which was carrying passengers to Elephanta Island from the Gateway of India.

Among the victims are Rakesh Ahire, his wife Harshada, and their son Nidhesh, who had travelled from Nashik two days prior for Rakesh’s asthma treatment. A relative confirmed this information to PTI.

The impact resulted in widespread panic, with survivors recounting harrowing scenes of people screaming and clinging to each other. While 98 passengers were rescued, the Navy continues its search and rescue operations for two individuals still missing, employing eight ships and a helicopter.

The Indian Navy has ordered a Board of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. The inquiry will examine how the naval vessel lost control and the events leading up to the collision. The Navy also confirmed that search and rescue efforts were underway in the area until late on December 18 and 19.

The incident has prompted a wave of grief and outrage, with families of the victims demanding answers and accountability. Funerals for the Ahire family are scheduled for Thursday in Nashik. The investigation is expected to shed light on the cause of the accident and the extent of any negligence involved. The investigation is ongoing.
