Fri Dec 20 11:28:39 UTC 2024: ## Veteran Haryana Leader Om Prakash Chautala Passes Away at 89
**Gurugram, Haryana:** Om Prakash Chautala, a prominent figure in Haryana politics and former Chief Minister of the state, passed away at his Gurugram residence on Friday at the age of 89. Chautala, who served as Chief Minister a record four times, with his last tenure lasting from 1999 to 2005, leaves behind a significant political legacy.
Son of the legendary Chaudhary Devi Lal, a former Deputy Prime Minister of India, Chautala’s political career spanned decades. While achieving considerable success, his career was also marked by controversies, including a recruitment scam that resulted in imprisonment.
Chautala’s family has held a powerful influence on Haryana’s political landscape for generations. However, internal family feuds led to a split in his party, the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), in 2013, following the imprisonment of Chautala and his son Ajay Chautala in the JBT scam. This division saw the rise of his grandson, Dushyant Chautala, who formed his own party, Jannayak Janata Party, in 2018. The family’s political influence continues to be felt, with members from the third and fourth generations actively involved in politics.
Chaudhary Devi Lal, whose political career spanned nearly four decades, established a powerful political dynasty in Haryana. His influence extended to his sons, including Om Prakash Chautala, and continues through his grandsons. The family’s legacy remains a key factor in the state’s political dynamics.
