Thu Dec 19 16:18:30 UTC 2024: ## Karnataka CM Vows to Tackle North Karnataka Regional Imbalance

**Belagavi, December 19, 2024** – Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reaffirmed his government’s commitment to addressing the persistent regional imbalance in the state, particularly in the north Karnataka region. Speaking in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, he acknowledged that despite significant investment – over ₹17,850 crore beyond regular funds allocated to backward taluks – 14 districts in north Karnataka have not seen the expected progress.

This investment followed recommendations from the D.M. Nanjundappa Committee report on regional imbalance (2002). The CM highlighted that while ₹31,000 crore was spent over eight years based on the committee’s recommendations, with ₹17,500 crore going to north Karnataka, the desired development hasn’t materialized.

To further analyze the issue, Mr. Siddaramaiah established a high-powered committee headed by economist Govinda Rao. The government plans to prioritize completing pending irrigation projects, including raising the Almatti dam’s height to 524.256 meters, irrigating an additional 5.94 lakh hectares. While land acquisition for this project remains a challenge, the CM announced a plan to acquire 73,020 acres swiftly.

Progress on the Mahadayi project, crucial for providing drinking water to Hubballi-Dharwad and other urban areas, is pending National Wildlife Board approval. The CM stated the government has prepared a revised plan and awaits board clearance to commence the project.

Mr. Siddaramaiah also emphasized the special status granted to the Kalyana Karnataka region under Article 370 (J) in 2011, facilitating the establishment of the Kalyana Karnataka Region Development Board. To date, ₹11,500 crore has been spent through the board, with an additional ₹5,000 crore allocated for 2024-25. The board has cleared 27,264 projects, with 8,621 ongoing, and has made significant strides in filling job vacancies in the region.
