Tue Dec 17 18:43:10 UTC 2024: ## The Real Woman Behind a Literary Icon: Tracing the Inspiration for Thi. Janakiraman’s “Mohamul”

**CHENNAI, December 18, 2024** – The enduring character of Yamuna, the ideal wife in Thi. Janakiraman’s celebrated Tamil novel *Mohamul*, has sparked renewed interest in the real-life woman who inspired her. While the house on Thukkampalayam Street in Kumbakonam where she reportedly resided still stands, it has been significantly altered, leaving little resemblance to the one described in the novel.

Janakiraman himself revealed in his essay, “Novel Pirantha Kathai” (The Birth of the Novel Mohamul), that Yamuna was based on a woman he knew – eight years his senior, intelligent, and strikingly beautiful. He described his admiration for her eventually blossoming into love before she married an electrical engineer.

Several individuals have corroborated the existence of this woman, including Indira Parthasarathy, a student of Janakiraman; former IAS officer and film director of the *Mohamul* adaptation, Gnanarajasekaran; and writers Ravi Subramaniam, Rani Thilak, and Sukumaran, all sharing anecdotes and memories connected to the house and the woman. Even a map reportedly drawn by Swaminatha Athreyan, another friend of Janakiraman, helped guide some to the location.

While Gnanarajasekaran chose not to meet the woman during filming, opting to preserve his literary image of Yamuna, others have attested to her presence in the house with her daughters. Kalyanaraman, author of a book on Janakiraman’s works, highlighted the historical and socio-cultural significance of Janakiraman’s writing, suggesting the street may now become a point of interest for literature enthusiasts.

The article concludes that while the physical house has changed, the legacy of Yamuna, a character born from a real-life inspiration, continues to captivate readers and further illuminate the rich tapestry of Tamil literature.
