LOS ANGELES, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the shortlists for ten categories of the 97th Academy Awards today. Hundreds of films and songs competed for a place on these crucial preliminary lists, with the final nominations to be announced on January 17, 2025.

Among the most anticipated categories, fifteen films have been shortlisted for Best Documentary Feature, including “Dahomey,” “Sugarcane,” and “The Bibi Files.” Similarly, the Best International Feature Film category saw fifteen films advance from an initial pool of 85 countries, with representatives from Brazil (“I’m Still Here”), France (“Emilia Pérez”), and Senegal (“Dahomey”) among the contenders.

The highly competitive Best Original Song category narrowed down to fifteen contenders, with songs featured in films like “Challengers,” “Emilia Pérez,” “Kneecap” and “The Wild Robot” making the cut. The Best Original Score shortlist includes twenty scores, with notable entries from “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” “Gladiator II,” and “Wicked.”

Other shortlists include fifteen films each for Documentary Short, Animated Short, and Live Action Short Film categories. Ten films were shortlisted in Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound, and Visual Effects, each requiring branch-specific voting processes to determine the final five nominees.

The voting process for nominations will run from January 8th to 12th, 2025. The 97th Academy Awards ceremony will be held on March 2nd, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, airing live on ABC and streaming on Hulu.
