**Seattle, WA** – A 73-year-old Seattle woman, Patricia Taylor, has fallen victim to a sophisticated online romance scam, losing at least $20,000 to a fraudster posing as MSNBC news anchor Ari Melber. The scam, detailed in a New York Post report, involved a month-long Facebook interaction where the perpetrator convincingly impersonated the journalist.
Taylor, a former Boeing employee, was allegedly lured into sending money and gift cards under the guise of helping Melber’s supposedly sick dog. The scammer further manipulated Taylor into believing they were in a romantic relationship, even sending her an engagement ring. The deception culminated in Taylor’s attempt to fly from Seattle to New York to meet her supposed fiancé last Monday.
However, Taylor’s daughter, Meri, intercepted her mother at a layover in Portland, fearing the scammer would hold her hostage for ransom. Meri expressed concern that her mother, who is reportedly struggling with her health and medication, may still be vulnerable to the perpetrator’s manipulation. The scammer even used AI-generated voice messages mimicking Melber’s voice to maintain the deception.
The family has staged interventions to try and convince Taylor of the scam, highlighting the perpetrator’s use of manipulative tactics and the advanced technology employed. Meri expressed bewilderment at her mother falling victim, stating, “Our mother is not a dumb person. How did she fall for this?”
The incident underscores the growing problem of elder fraud, with the FBI reporting annual losses exceeding $3 billion. Authorities are urging caution and vigilance, particularly among older adults who may be more susceptible to such elaborate scams. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
