Tue Dec 17 06:26:36 UTC 2024: ## Ambulance Delivery Saves Mother and Baby in Rural Maharashtra

**Palghar, Maharashtra, December 17, 2024** – A 25-year-old pregnant woman, Kalyani Bhoye, successfully delivered a healthy baby boy in an ambulance en route to a better-equipped hospital, highlighting the challenges faced by rural healthcare in Maharashtra.

Bhoye, experiencing complications, was admitted to Wada Rural Hospital on December 13th. Due to the lack of specialized maternity facilities at the rural hospital, and the detection of foetal distress, she was referred to Thane Civil Hospital, 75 km away.

The transfer, however, was complicated by poor road conditions. Just 10 kilometers into the journey, the bumpy terrain necessitated an emergency delivery within the ambulance, assisted by a doctor accompanying Bhoye. Both mother and baby are reported to be in stable condition after receiving further treatment at Wada Rural Hospital following the delivery.

Dr. Yadav Shekhare, medical superintendent of Wada Rural Hospital, acknowledged the hospital’s limited resources while praising the quick thinking and dedication of the medical staff involved. He highlighted the need for improved infrastructure and better road conditions to ensure safer transport for patients in rural areas. Despite the challenges, the hospital manages an average of six deliveries daily, including several caesarean sections. An internal review of the incident will be conducted, but Dr. Shekhare stated that the doctors acted appropriately in prioritizing the patient’s care.
