Tue Dec 17 07:05:26 UTC 2024: ## Powerful Earthquake Strikes Vanuatu, Causing Damage and at Least One Death
**Port Vila, Vanuatu** – A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck Vanuatu on Tuesday, causing significant damage to buildings in the capital, Port Vila, and resulting in at least one death. The quake, which struck around noon local time, was centered approximately 57 kilometers deep.
The US Embassy in Port Vila, which opened only this past July, suffered considerable damage and is currently closed. The building, which also houses the diplomatic missions of several Western nations including New Zealand, France, and the United Kingdom, sustained significant structural damage, with reports of partial collapse and shattered windows.
According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), damage is widespread, including collapsed buildings in downtown Port Vila and infrastructure damage in provincial areas. The IFRC has deployed volunteers to assist affected communities.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) issued a yellow pager warning for the earthquake, indicating potential casualties and economic losses estimated at 1-10% of Vanuatu’s GDP. Approximately 73,000 people experienced severe shaking, with 36,000 of those in Port Vila.
Initial tsunami warnings were issued but later cancelled, although minor sea level fluctuations were anticipated in some coastal areas. Communication disruptions followed the quake, with government websites and phone lines down. Social media channels for relevant government agencies have remained largely inactive.
The earthquake underscores the strategic importance of the Pacific region, with the US recently increasing its diplomatic presence in the area to counter growing Chinese influence. The newly damaged US embassy in Vanuatu highlights the vulnerability of even recently established diplomatic infrastructure in the face of such natural disasters.
