Mon Dec 16 13:09:37 UTC 2024: ## Ukrainian Intelligence Claims Significant North Korean Casualties in Russia’s Kursk Region

**KYIV, Ukraine** – Ukraine’s military intelligence agency (GUR) reported on Monday that approximately 30 North Korean soldiers were killed or wounded during weekend fighting in the Kursk region bordering Ukraine. The clashes occurred near three villages where Russia has been battling a Ukrainian incursion for four months. The GUR also stated that at least three North Korean servicemen are missing.

These claims, which cannot be independently verified, mark the first reported North Korean casualties in the nearly three-year-long war. The Kremlin referred questions to the Russian Defense Ministry, which has yet to comment.

The Pentagon and Ukrainian officials estimate that roughly 10,000 North Korean troops have been deployed to support Russia’s war effort, a commitment pledged by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un under a mutual defense pact. However, military analysts suggest that language barriers and communication problems hinder effective coordination between Russian and North Korean forces, potentially impacting Russian operations in the Kursk region.

Ukrainian forces first engaged with North Korean units in November, and seized territory within Russia’s Kursk region last August – the first occupation of Russian territory since World War II. While this incursion hasn’t significantly altered the overall war dynamics, Russia has generally been advancing elsewhere, making slow but steady gains in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region despite substantial losses.
