Tue Dec 17 09:40:34 UTC 2024: ## Malayalam Film “Feminist Fathima” Premieres at IFFK, Offers Subtle Satire on Patriarchy

**Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala –** The International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) is currently showcasing the directorial debut of Fasil Muhammed, “Feminichi Fathima” (Feminist Fathima). This Malayalam-language film uses subtle satire to explore the constraints faced by women in a conservative Muslim community.

The film centers on Fathima, a wife and mother whose life revolves around the demands of her conservative husband and family. Her simmering frustration boils over when a simple incident – her son wetting the bed – highlights the lack of agency she possesses. Her husband’s refusal to replace the damaged mattress, citing religious reasons against interest-bearing loans, forces Fathima to find a solution independently, marking a turning point in her life.

Director Fasil Muhammed, who also wrote and edited the film, emphasizes that Fathima’s transformation is not a dramatic revolt but a quiet assertion of self. He drew inspiration from observing similar situations in his own life, particularly a conversation overheard involving a woman dealing with a similar domestic issue.

The film’s cast includes Shamla Hamza as Fathima, who relates to the character based on her own observations of women in similar situations. The director chose to set the story within a Muslim context due to his familiarity with the milieu, carefully depicting both conservative and modern elements within the community.

“Feminichi Fathima” has garnered significant support from local residents during filming, with many recognizing themselves in the story. The film is produced by Thamar K.V. and Sudheesh Scaria and is expected to have a theatrical release following its premiere at IFFK. The film screened at the New Theatre today at 5:30 pm.
