Avignon, France – Dominique Pelicot, 72, expressed remorse and asked for forgiveness from his family during his trial for orchestrating the rape of his then-wife, Gisele Pelicot, over nearly a decade. Pelicot, who faces a potential 20-year prison sentence, admitted to drugging his wife and recruiting over 50 men online to sexually assault her. The trial, which has captivated France and garnered international attention, concluded with Pelicot’s final statement on Monday.

In a courtroom statement, Pelicot lauded his ex-wife’s courage, calling her a “feminist hero” for her refusal to be silenced and for bravely testifying against her attackers. Fifty other men, aged 27 to 74, are also on trial, facing charges related to the assaults. One of the accused admitted to raping his own wife with Pelicot’s assistance.
