**Kolkata, India –** Despite ongoing political tensions, India and Bangladesh commemorated the 53rd anniversary of Vijay Diwas (Victory Day) on Monday with a joint ceremony at Fort William in Kolkata. A nine-member Bangladeshi delegation, including eight Mukti Jodhas (freedom fighters) and a Brigadier General, attended the event alongside senior Indian Army officers.
The ceremony included wreath-laying at the War Memorial and featured reminiscences from veterans on both sides who recounted their experiences during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. Mukti Jodhas emphasized the crucial role played by India in supporting the liberation, highlighting the assistance provided in terms of training, supplies, and overall support. They also acknowledged the strong personal ties forged during this period, which continue to this day.
Indian war veterans, including those who fought alongside their fathers, shared similar sentiments, stressing the humanitarian aspect of India’s intervention to stop the atrocities inflicted upon the Bangladeshi people by Pakistani forces. However, several veterans expressed concern and sadness regarding the current socio-political situation in Bangladesh.
While the ceremony proceeded with mutual respect, the participation of the Bangladeshi delegation amidst heightened tensions between the two nations was notable. Both West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee acknowledged India’s vital role in the Bangladesh Liberation War. The event underscores the complex relationship between the two countries, marked by historical camaraderie and contemporary political challenges.
