**San Francisco, USA:** Renowned tabla virtuoso Ustad Zakir Hussain passed away on Monday at the age of 73. He had been hospitalized in San Francisco due to an undisclosed illness for some time. Hussain, a recipient of the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan, leaves behind a legacy as a global icon of Indian classical music and an estimated net worth of $1 million (approximately ₹8.48 crore).
His journey began humbly. Born in Mumbai on March 9, 1951, to the legendary tabla player Ustad Allah Rakha, Hussain learned the instrument from a young age. Beyond his tabla virtuosity, Hussain also released his first album, “Living in the Material World,” in 1973 at the age of 22, and appeared in 12 films. His contributions were recognized with numerous awards, including five Grammys. His influence transcended musical boundaries, solidifying his place as a global icon.
He is survived by his Italian-American wife, Antonia Minnecola, a dancer, teacher, and his manager, and their two daughters, Anisa and Isabella. His wife was a disciple of the famed late dancer Sitara Devi.
