**Kolkata/ Dhaka, December 16** – India and Bangladesh today jointly commemorated the 53rd anniversary of Victory Day, marking the end of the 1971 India-Pakistan War. The celebrations began in Dhaka with a 31-gun salute at sunrise. The 13-day war resulted in the liberation of Bangladesh from Pakistan.

While the main celebrations unfolded in Dhaka, a joint commemoration was also held in Kolkata, where tributes were paid to the martyrs of the war. The Kolkata event included participation from Bangladeshi freedom fighters.

This year’s commemorations take place amidst reported unrest in Bangladesh. Despite this, a delegation from Bangladesh attended the Kolkata events. Separately, tributes were also paid to the martyrs of the Kargil War in Gorakhpur, India. The events across both nations highlighted the enduring significance of the 1971 war and the continued bond between India and Bangladesh.
