NEW DELHI – The Supreme Court on Monday issued an interim order preventing Carnatic singer T.M. Krishna from being recognized as the recipient of the Sangeetha Kalanidhi M.S. Subbulakshmi award. The decision follows a legal challenge by the grandson of the legendary singer, V. Shrinivasan, who objects to Krishna’s past writings about Subbulakshmi, which he claims were “misogynistic.”
Krishna received the award, sponsored by the Hindu Group, from the Music Academy on Sunday. However, the court ruled that until the matter is fully adjudicated, Krishna cannot claim the award or use its association. The court cited articles written by Krishna containing what it deemed offensive language regarding Subbulakshmi, including terms like “sexy,” “saintly Barbie doll,” and “hoax.”
The court’s interim order, while not requiring the Music Academy to physically reclaim the award, effectively prevents Krishna from using the title. While Krishna’s lawyers argued his intention was not to disrespect Subbulakshmi and that he was critiquing the hagiographic image surrounding her, the court emphasized the sensitivity of the issue and the profound respect held for Subbulakshmi.
The Supreme Court issued notices to Krishna, the Music Academy, and the Hindu Group, seeking their responses within six weeks. The case highlights the tension between artistic expression and the reverence for cultural icons. The court’s final decision will determine whether Krishna can ultimately retain the award.
