Mon Dec 16 03:47:27 UTC 2024: ## Devastating Cyclone Chido Leaves Hundreds, Possibly Thousands Dead in Mayotte

**Paris, France –** Cyclone Chido, the most powerful cyclone to hit the French Indian Ocean archipelago of Mayotte in nearly a century, has caused widespread devastation and a potentially catastrophic loss of life. A senior French official estimates that several hundred, possibly thousands, may have perished in the storm’s wake.

Prefect Francois-Xavier Bieuville stated on local media that the death toll could reach into the thousands. The French interior ministry, however, acknowledged the difficulty in accounting for all victims, citing the rapid burial practices in the predominantly Muslim region as a significant obstacle in determining a precise figure.

The cyclone, which struck overnight with winds exceeding 200 kph (124 mph), inflicted severe damage across the island. Homes, government buildings, and even a hospital were significantly impacted. A resident of Mamoudzou, Mohamed Ishmael, described the scene as resembling “the aftermath of a nuclear war,” noting the complete destruction of entire neighborhoods. Aerial footage confirmed the extensive damage, showing widespread wreckage of makeshift homes, particularly in areas known for illegal immigration from the nearby Comoros islands.

Images from local media depict the harrowing conditions, including a mother pushing a baby’s crib through flooded hospital corridors and capsized police boats. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his condolences, acknowledging the immense suffering and loss experienced by the people of Mayotte.

The high number of undocumented migrants in Mayotte (over 100,000 according to the interior ministry) further complicates the assessment of casualties. The disaster has also raised concerns about access to essential resources such as food, water, and sanitation.

An air bridge is being established from the nearby French territory of Reunion Island to provide aid. The cyclone subsequently moved on to northern Mozambique, causing damage to infrastructure but with the full extent of the impact yet to be determined. Comoros reported minor injuries and some property damage.

This tragedy marks the first major challenge for newly appointed Prime Minister Francois Bayrou. The long-term effects of Cyclone Chido on the already impoverished and socially unstable island of Mayotte remain to be seen. Mayotte, significantly poorer than mainland France, has struggled with gang violence and social unrest for decades, with over three-quarters of its population living below the poverty line.
