Mon Dec 16 10:17:34 UTC 2024: ## Impeached South Korean President Faces Constitutional Court Hearing Amidst Political Turmoil

**Seoul, South Korea** – Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol is facing a Constitutional Court hearing on December 27th following his failed attempt to declare martial law. The court will determine whether to uphold his impeachment by parliament, a process that could lead to new elections within two months.

Yoon, who has refused to cooperate with prosecutors investigating allegations of insurrection and abuse of power, announced his legal defense team on Monday, led by veteran prosecutor Kim Hong-il. Prosecutors have issued a second summons for questioning and could seek an arrest warrant if he continues to refuse cooperation.

The impeachment, stemming from Yoon’s attempt to suspend civilian rule, has plunged South Korea into political chaos. Several officials, including the leader of Yoon’s governing party, have resigned. Acting President Han Duck-soo, the Prime Minister, is currently leading the country.

The Constitutional Court’s review process is expected to take up to six months. While Yoon is not required to attend the December 27th hearing, the court’s decision will ultimately determine his fate.

Meanwhile, the acting government is working to reassure international partners and stabilize the financial markets. The finance minister, Bank of Korea governor, and top financial regulators have pledged round-the-clock monitoring, and the stock market has shown signs of recovery. Acting President Han has already spoken with US President Biden, reaffirming the bilateral alliance. China, while expressing a desire for stable ties with Seoul, previously voiced displeasure over Yoon’s comments regarding anti-espionage laws.
