Mon Dec 16 10:10:00 UTC 2024: ## Retiring Senator Romney: Trump Defines the GOP, but Deserves a Chance

**Washington, D.C.** – Outgoing Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) conceded in a CNN interview Sunday that Donald Trump and the MAGA movement now define the Republican Party, despite his continued criticism of the president-elect’s character. While maintaining his disapproval of Trump’s leadership, Romney acknowledged the president-elect’s strong hold on the party. “MAGA is the Republican Party and Donald Trump is the Republican Party today,” he stated.

Romney, who ran unsuccessfully against Barack Obama in 2012, admitted he was wrong in predicting Trump wouldn’t win, but reiterated his concerns about Trump’s character and his impact on the country. He emphasized his intention to continue voicing his opinions, even if they differ from the majority.

Despite his disagreements, Romney said Trump deserves “a chance” to implement his policies, and he expressed some agreement on policy matters. He characterized Trump’s cabinet picks as “unusual,” but stated the president-elect has the right to choose his own team, subject to Senate confirmation. He also underscored the Senate’s responsibility to vet nominees for suitability and competency.

Romney reflected on his history of challenging Trump, including his vote to convict Trump during his first impeachment trial and the January 6th insurrection vote. He referred to January 6th as “a very dark day in American history.” He expressed confidence in the resilience of American institutions.

While acknowledging potential for political retribution from Trump, Romney expressed little personal concern. He also praised Senator JD Vance, predicting him as a potential 2028 GOP presidential nominee. Romney did give Trump credit for attracting working-class voters to the Republican Party, a development he believes requires internal adjustments within the GOP.

Romney concluded his interview by prioritizing his family’s view of his legacy over historical recognition, expressing a desire to be remembered as someone who upheld their beliefs and loved their country.
