Mon Dec 16 11:28:52 UTC 2024: ## Google Maps Timeline Feature to Shut Down, Users Must Act by June 2025
**Mountain View, CA –** Google is ending its popular Timeline feature in Google Maps on June 9, 2025. The company announced the change last year, originally setting a December 2024 deadline, but has extended it to give users more time to save their location data. Timeline, which allows users to revisit past locations and routes, will no longer be stored on Google’s servers.
Instead, location data will be stored only on individual devices. Users have until June 9th to update their settings to retain their location history; otherwise, only the past 90 days of data will be transferred to their devices, and older data will be deleted. Furthermore, Timeline data will no longer be accessible via web browsers, only through the Google Maps mobile app.
Google emphasizes this change enhances user privacy. However, the shift means users must take proactive steps to preserve their Timeline data. To keep their location history, users must update their Google Maps app (version 11.106 or higher on Android 6.0 or higher), access Timeline settings, and choose how much data to retain locally. They can also opt to continue sharing data with Google.
For users switching devices, Google offers a backup and restore function to transfer Timeline data. This encrypted backup is stored on Google’s servers temporarily but must be imported to the new device.
The deadline is fast approaching; Google urges users to review their settings before June 9, 2025, to avoid losing their travel history.
